A Murga group, Curtidores de Hongos, performs at a neighborhood fundraiser during carnival in Montevideo, the capitol city of Uruguay, South America. The murga, as a genre, was inherited from the Spanish cultural tradition, but evolved to be the typical expression of the Uruguayn carnival, involving costume, chorale, parody, satire, and humor related to government, current events and popular culture. Singing is a capella, with musical accompaniment typically by a snare drum, a tom-tom, and cymbals, sometimes also a guitar.
